Not a substitute for professional advice
Personal finance is personal. What works for one person may be entirely wrong for another based on their income, assets, and debts; tax situation and residency; risk tolerance; family and dependent circumstances; investment time horizon; and the laws and regulations applicable to their situation.
Before making any significant financial decision — investing, taking on debt, retiring, purchasing insurance, or transferring money internationally — please consult a qualified professional:
- Kenya: Registered investment advisers regulated by the CMA
- Nigeria: SEC-registered investment advisers
- South Africa: FSCA-authorised financial advisers
- Ghana: SEC-registered advisers
- UK: FCA-authorised financial advisers — check the register at register.fca.org.uk
- US: SEC or FINRA-registered advisers — check brokercheck.finra.org
- EU: MiFID II-authorised advisers in your member state

Calculator limitations
Our financial calculators are planning tools, not projections or forecasts. They use simplified models that:
- Assume constant rates of return — real investment returns vary significantly and can be negative
- Do not account for inflation unless explicitly stated
- Do not account for taxes — tax treatment varies significantly by country, residency, and individual circumstance
- Use generalised safe withdrawal rates (such as 4%) that are debated in financial literature and may not apply in African markets where historical data series are shorter
- Assume regular, consistent contributions that may not reflect irregular income common in informal economies
The 4% FIRE rule, for example, is based primarily on US market data. Its applicability to NSE-listed portfolios, multi-currency portfolios, or portfolios with significant exposure to African markets has not been established with the same evidence base.
Use our calculators as a starting point for conversations with a qualified adviser, not as a definitive answer.
04
Accuracy of information
We research and update our content carefully. However:
- Financial regulations, tax rates, and product terms change — sometimes rapidly
- We cannot guarantee all information is current at the time you read it
- Country-specific information may be incomplete or subject to local variation
- Interest rates, exchange rates, and market data cited are accurate at the time of publication and may have changed
Always verify time-sensitive financial information — interest rates, regulatory thresholds, tax bands — with the relevant institution or regulator directly. We include a “Last reviewed” date on all major articles and calculators to help you assess the currency of the information.
05
Affiliate relationships and editorial independence
Some content on this site includes affiliate links to financial products and services. When you click these links and take a qualifying action, we may receive compensation from the relevant company.
Our editorial policy is clear:
- We never allow affiliate relationships to influence our editorial conclusions
- We never recommend a product solely because it pays a higher commission rate
- Products we recommend have been independently researched
- All affiliate relationships are disclosed on the relevant page
Our full editorial standards are available at themoneyrecipe.com/editorial-standards.
06
Investment risk disclosure
All investments involve risk, including the possible loss of principal. Past performance is not indicative of future results.
Stock market investments (NSE, JSE, LSE, NYSE)
Markets can and do fall significantly over extended periods. You may receive back less than you invested. Equity investment is not suitable as a short-term savings vehicle.
Currency risk
Multi-currency financial planning involves exchange rate risk. The Kenyan shilling, Nigerian naira, and Ghanaian cedi can depreciate against the British pound or US dollar, eroding real returns measured in your home currency or the currency of your intended spending.
Remittance services
Exchange rates offered by remittance providers change frequently. Any rates shown in our content are illustrative at the time of writing. Always verify current rates directly with the provider before sending money.
Cryptocurrency
We do not provide cryptocurrency investment advice. Any mention of cryptocurrency on this site is for educational context only. Cryptocurrency markets are highly volatile and largely unregulated in most jurisdictions.
07
Tax disclaimer
Tax treatment of investments, remittances, and income varies significantly by country, residency status, and individual circumstance. We do not provide tax advice, and nothing on this site should be treated as tax guidance.
Diaspora users should be especially careful: many countries tax the worldwide income of their residents, and cross-border remittances may have tax implications in both the sending and receiving country. The interaction between two or more tax systems is a specialist area — consult a tax adviser qualified in all relevant jurisdictions.
